Tehran High Flying Tumblers
Traditional Competition Method & Rules
Birds during preparation for Teer Mah Competition
Notice the Netting that could cover the entire Roofop
Loft of Haj Mortezaei , Shahre-Rey , Tehran
Specific rules also could include that  1 bird will not be counted at all for any reason. The idea behind that is that the hungry hawk will take one. Any bird that lands anywhere except the Fancier's roof will be disqualified and his time will not be counted.
After the last bird is landed, they average the total qualified time against total number of the birds flown and the fancier with higher time will win.
For minimum of 101 birds, any time over 5 hrs is respectable and considerd exellent. There have been many records brocken in 7 hour range.
To my knowledge nobody has broken the 8 hour mark yet.
This type of competions are for the very serious fanciers who have deticated their life to this hobby and it's not for everyone who flies pigeons in Tehran. Matter of fact the more serious the Fanciers the higher number of birds in competion. This is to make it more difficult and fit only the Masters.
When the word of a big competion by well known Masters gets out, thousands of people will show up in the streets to watch. After it's all over many dollars will change hand among the spectators.
After Teer Mah is over all the birds that are still in top condition will be put up for next year competion.
In the mean while the concentration will be on settling, training the young birds and the selection of the best for the upcomming Championship season.

Haj Hossain Mortezaei is a well known and respected Eshghbaz in Tehran and has some the best of Tehran Tumblers in Iran and have had several birds with records of more than 9 hours flight time. I also want to thank Haj- Mortezaei for sharing these beautiful birds with us.

For 5 to 7 days straight, the birds are let out on to the roof for a few hours in the morning and when they get thirsty from the heat they are called into their coops. They also lower their ration in this period and feed them only once a day in the afternoon.
After the 5 or 7 days, birds are forced to fly for six straight days with no rest at all to loosen their muscles and bring them back into shape.
At this stage the birds are ready to go through a exercise program and get ready for the race. Most Fanciers fly them for 2 days and rest them for 2 but this varies from Fancier to Fancier. The birds only diet for the entire flying month is Milet.
The prepration for the competion begins by selection of the judges, set the specific rules such as number of birds to fly and the time allowed to get all the birds up in the air. Remember we are talking about hundreds of birds and getting them all in the air is not as easy as you may think. This is usually in a 15 minutes range. They set the competition days in advance. They also agree on the number of birds to release to walk around on the roof top. These are nonflyers that either have their Primeries trimmed or tied. These are let on to the rooftop after all the birds are up and flying. The nonflyers are called " Zeer Paei " in Farsi , translation would be " By the feet".  This is to provide security for the flying birds to land anytime they wish and are not scared to land.
Each Fancier will have his own judge and together they select the center judge.
A couple of days before the race day, for identification, all the birds are stamped on their tails.
